This book is wonderful. The illustrations are captivating and the writing couldn't be better for young kids with tough questions. This book seriously helped not only our kids with their questions, but it really helps me with my own fears about death. Even at 30 years old, and knowing full well that we all will one day sir, the fear of the unknown has been with me since I was a little girl. I grew up in a very religious household but never believed any of it. I can remember being very young, maybe 5 or 6, and fully believing that death was like before I was born. I would lay in bed and try to imagine it and end up in a panic. I never told my parents of my fears because I knew what they would say and that I wouldn't believe any of it. As I grew up these thoughts began to plague my mind unwanted and sometimes the fear would stop me in my tracks completely out of the blue. Panic attacks at night. This book helped me look at it in another light. Not the end of something. I'll still be out there. Just in a different way. Thank you for such comforting words and scientific facts. We may not know what lies on the other side of life, but we do know that we only have this one and we must live every single day as if it is our last. I can say that this book will be pulled from our shelves many many times.
We own all of the Annabelle & Aiden books. The illustrations are rich and gloriously alluring as always, but we love the message of the book most of all.The scientifically endearing take death has a hopeful sound. My children and I have talked about religion beliefs and non religious beliefs about living on in the world around us after we die; however, the book is much more eloquent.I would recommend this book to any parent that wants to talk to their child about death in a more secular manner. Death doesn't have to be something for kids (or adults) to fear.The author presents it in an engaging age appropriate and beautiful way. The only thing I wish is that it had been available to share with my children when my mother had passed a couple years ago.
I can't say enough good things about this book. I enjoy the evidence-based approach to all the explanations in the Annabell & Aiden series. This title does a good job of easing some of my child's fears about death and dying. It encourages her to focus on being the best person she can be, soaking in all the beautiful things in our world, and to love life and live it to its fullest. The book is well organized. In fact, on more than one occasion while reading the book, my child would ask a question and the book addressed it in the next couple lines. It is beautifully illustrated and had my child's eyes glued to the pages the first time we read it.
JR Becker’s “What Happens When We Die†is a wonderfully written children’s story on death that is enjoyed by all (not just kids). The story is delivered in a smooth poetic rhyme that is fun to read aloud to my sons (6 and 8 years old). I love how the author is able to talk about death without the fairy tales to calm human fears. Instead, JR Becker talks about death in the cycle of life; shedding light to a positive outlook that it’s not the end but a cycle – the circle of life. The colorful illustrations and wonderful characters (e.g., Tardigrade Tom) make this book so special. We loved the factoids that are included throughout the story – e.g., fat cells last 25 years! I highly recommend this book as well as the other Annabelle and Aiden stories.
I was so excited to discover these books. Unfortunately they are confusing and the chaotic layout makes it difficult to read. On some pages it is unclear what text is meant to be read versus which text is merely background art. I realize that may not make sense, but it will if you pick up one of these books and flip through it. Very cluttered and confusing layouts to the text.
My 7 year old daughter has been asking a lot of questions about death lately. This book does a great job of explaining it in simple ways and even has more complicated scientific explanations they can read as they get older. Absolutely recommend it!
It's so hard to find good science-based children's books about difficult subjects. Our four and a half-year-old daughter has not asked about death yet, but I know some of her friends have and this book explains in age-appropriate terms that life ends and what we know happens afterward. The topic is sensitively presented and very engaging for our daughter.
My daughter just turned 5, so I knew that the “death†talk would be coming soon. One reason I was very much looking forward to the new Annabelle & Aiden book. We received the book on a Thursday, and without explaining to her what it was about, the next night she asked what death was. Talk about a timely arrival!The book is beautiful, both the words and the artwork. It’s a wonderful way to explain the concept of death to a child (and even adults) from a more secular perspective without all the woo. But I’d like to think that there’s something very positive that people who are more spiritually or religiously inclined can get out of it as well.This is the fourth book in this series, and they’re all wonderful.
