As a guy who actually supported the SOG Mission out of CCC Kontum, I know exactly what John writes about. As a pilot for the 361st Pink Panthers I covered their missions in Cobras and as Red Lead for the 170th Bikinis I put them on the ground and pulled them out under occasionally very difficult circumstances. For 9 of my 12 months in RVN I flew in support of CCC. The missions events I was associated with 69 and 70 are very accurately described. I remembered John from my tour and specifically those missions where he was riding with Covey and out locating LZs and the teams in the field. Several years ago I had the good fortune to meet up with John at a VHPA Reunion and introduce him to my family and my sons, both of whom had read this book and several others by John. We had a chance to relive some of the missions that I had flown on in his book and some that were not.The men of SOG were a very special group of "elite warriors" and it was a privilege to have been given the opportunity to support them. They used to say to me and our aircrews "Its takes really big ones to fly across the fence and land so deep in enemy territory". We always responded "if that's true what exactly does it take to get off the Aircraft and stay there?"The book is excellent! The stories are true. When we launched from Dak To our first radio call was "Fire control I need arty Ben Het and points west"Larry Atwood "Red Lead"Panther 222Gator 13Bikini 27

The Green Berets who volunteered for SOG (Studies and Observation Group) during the Vietnam War could hardly walk because of the size of their kahoonas. But walk, run, crawl, swim, parachute, hide and fight, they did. John Plaster was one of them.A One-Zero (the designation for a team leader), Plaster fought for three years straight, most of it behind enemy lines. The small (6-10 member) teams, usually three American Green Berets and the rest Montagnards, landed and infiltrated through triple canopy jungle. Sometimes they were never seen by the enemy. Sometimes they didn’t fire a shot. A lot of times they fought like hell, lost team mates and barely escaped...or didn’t.Secret Commandos is the story of these SOG teams and their missions. What’s very nice is that Plaster identifies the individuals who go on these missions and so the reader has an investment in each. There are danger close strafing and bombing runs, RPG attacks, claymore mine explosions and, of course, CAR 15 shots fired. In the last quarter of the book, Plaster is a Covey Rider, an experienced Green Beret SOG operative who flies with an Air Force FAC (forward air controller) to monitor the SOG missions on insert, during their activities and on extract. Often enough an extraction is needed immediately after an insert as the LZ (landing zone) is covered by NVA soldiers. Most missions run their course. All too often, however, a SOG team calls, “Praire Fire. Praire Fire,” which means all hell is breaking loose and the guys on the ground have got to get out immediately. This is a thrilling read that’s full of action. More importantly, it’s a tribute to the men who fought and died...and those who fought a survived.

This is a very interesting book. I had started reading Mr. Plaster's book, "SOG" but found it much less interesting. Often non-fiction puts me to sleep but not "Secret Commandos...". I would not have stumbled across the subject had I not purchased a modern version of the MACV-SOG knife recently and did some reading about the origins of the knife. Although I was a young man during the Vietnam war, I had never heard of the Special Forces clandestine operations in Laos and Cambodia. This book informs the reader pretty thouroughly of a brave dedicated group of Special Forces and their role in U.S. efforts to control the flow of North Vietnamese soldiers and supplies from the North and through these two countries into South Vietnam. The stories of these reconnaissance missions assigned to small teams of Special Forces volunteers along with paid South Vietnamese and other indigenous men into Laos and Cambodia are very detailed and often tense to read about. The only thing the reader knows of the outcomes is that the author survives to write this book. It took incredible guts to do what they did and to go back time and again to stare at death up close and be able to think, fight and run or even harder, to know when to hide and wait. Plaster has all the details of not only his missions and his team's but of many other missions carried out successfully and disastrously by other teams lead by his fellow Special Forces "commandos". These are stories of heroism and heartbreak, tension and terror, preparation, anticipation and battle. Plaster has the names and the roles these men played during his horrifying time of not knowing whether he or his friends would come back from these incursions into places they weren't supposed to be. These were top secret operations. No one knew what these men were up to except the top echelon in South Vietnam and the Defense Department. They carried no ID and no uniforms or gear that could identify them as U.S. troops. The story of how they did this, what they did, the battles they had with North Vietnamese soldiers and the closed society of this small band of dedicated soldiers is fascinating, horrifying and remarkable. I'm glad this story is out for us to read. It informs us of the hardships and battles our men in uniform endured in service of those of us who went on with our daily lives as if all were well in the world. I don't ask ask if these men should have been there, I only know they were.

I served with C company 75th Rangers (formerly E company 20th Infantry LRP) almost simultaneously with Plaster's story. Our trails crossed, although I did not meet him personally, in Kon Tum RVN late in January 1969. We were running similar long range patrols North of Kon Tum at that time. His story was riveting and non-stop action from cover to cover. If you want to know what SOG was and did, this is the book to read. If you want a white knuckle, look over the shoulder, ride with some of the bravest men of the war, this is the book. You will not be disappointed with this book. I've read many books of this genre about the Viet Nam war and this is by far the best.
