This is a brilliantly conceived novel, one that is presented in several unique and interesting approaches. First it immediately grabs the reader with its minacious opening…indeed, it compels by its narration, a first person singular perspective of a local psychiatrist who manages to entwine himself irrevocably into the mental health and thus the day-to-day lives of most of the stories’ main protagonists.Second, the storyline is riveting, driven largely by intelligence gleaned from intimate interviews between the narrator and his patients. Third, and finally, we follow the machinations of our narrator’s mind as he purposely deceives key players in the plotline, first for his own selfish gain but, in the end, to give reason and sensibility into what becomes the final outcome. And to say that Ms. Walker is able to balance all of these subtle plotlines and sub-plots while still keeping her eye on the prize is at its worst, impressive and more moderately, genius. This is a work that combines intricate intellect with brilliant research while being penned in a wonderful literary tone that will keep the reader glued for hours. The main plot involves the gruesome rape of fifteen year old Jenny Kramer in the woods outside an upscale home in her neighborhood in Fairview, Connecticut. Finding the rapist becomes almost secondary however, as a new psychiatric treatment, one that allows the victim to entirely forget the savage event, is administered. And at first, it seems that Jenny rebounds…she returns to school and to friendships as if nothing serious has occurred. But remember, this is being disclosed by, at this point, what we believe to be the family psychiatrist. I say “family” psychiatrist because he’s suddenly also having to treat Jenny’s exceedingly angry father Tom, who will stop at nothing to find the “animal who did this to my daughter,” and mother Charlotte who seems peculiarly sublime, wanting nothing more than to forget the whole episode and “fix” their entire familial relationship. Our narrator/doctor, as it turns out, is also treating another patient who has undergone this same “trauma/forget” treatment…this, a young soldier who’s returned from Afghanistan with his right arm amputated, the result of an IED explosion which killed his partner. Discovering through this young man’s travails that this “forget” treatment has begun to cause unexpected and serious drawbacks, we get into some of the deep research Ms. Walker clearly undertook to explain the inner workings of the brain and the human emotional machine.Integrating this, we also discover that our narrator becomes intertwined into the investigation and must use all his psychoanalytical skills and much of his doctor/patient privileged testimony to extricate himself…it is also here that we see Walker peak as a thriller/mystery storyteller, keeping numerous balls afloat for us before converging them breathlessly toward multiple, but indeed satisfying, conclusions. It actually proceeds into an almost afterthought that we learn the identity of the rapist…by this point in the book we’ve become so entranced by the other constructs that we very nearly lose the import of the novel. To me, this enrapture with Walker’s other contrivances makes for such an engrossing mystery that the reader’s incidental loss of concentration on the main plotline suggests genius, both on the part of the author and her ability to grab and own the reader. And so to conclude, I obviously fully advocate this work as an intelligent and challenging literary thriller. Wendy Walker has succeeded on a number of levels with a work that contains extensive research that transposes into exacting but readable narrative. Further, she exposes an ability to carry the reader with enormously enticing fictional twists and turns that should make her an important genre fictional writer for years to come. I for one anxiously look forward to her next work.

I guess Im in the minority with this book, I find it very tedious and its been a struggle for me to finish it. Im an avid reader and usually can finish a book in a day or so if it holds my interest. I cant recommend this book.

A psychiatrist narrates his treatment of several patients whose memories he manipulates to his own advantage. The novel takes a deep plunge into the very nature of how memories are laid down and recalled, and how subject to error this process can be. Recent research has demonstrated that each time we evoke a past memory, it changes a little bit just in the act of being reconsidered in the light of our present circumstances. This novel ends with the irony of a good ending despite the waywardness the characters' attempts to protect both themselves and those they love. Somehow uprooting and examining memories which have been laid down authentically has a healing effect on most of the principle characters. A fascinating diversion and made more tantalizing by the fallible narrator.

This was one of the better books I read this year however, I can certainly see how this would not be a favorite for everyone. The beginning chapter opens with sexual violence and that can be challenging to read. However, the remainder of the book is mostly about ethics, how we come to terms with very challenging decisions/ facts and how we choose to act on our choices. I found it a fascinating psychological read and thought it was very well written.

I am a constant reader. Books books books -- blogs to find better books, reviews to find the best, recommendations to find even better than the best-- I just complained to my good friend sadly that it has been a long time since I have read something I COULDN'T put down--but now this is that book! Read it!! Don't wait another minute!! Best book in a long time! Thank u Wendy Walker for such great writing!!

I wish I had known that violent and graphic child rape was depicted in this story; I wouldn't have purchased the book. The mystery itself is suspenseful and well written. I just wanted to warn others who would rather not read the upsetting subject matter.

The interplay between and among characters is well-done, an interesting cautionary tale regarding social media. Things were very loosely tied together, but wrapped up nicely and neatly very quickly toward the end.

Give this book your time. It is dark, gritty, well thought out, and obviously well researched. It is a welcome departure from all the other beachy summer reads. It has the perfect levels of suspense and family drama. I'm very impressed that this is the author's first book....One of the best books I've read this summer.
