#10,184 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
The author chose to use a very formal stilted way of speaking, perhaps since the era was the early twentieth century and takes place in an upper class mansion, but the servants did not have a different voice from the educated daughter of the house. There were no contractions at all that I noted in the whole book, even outside of the conversations. The characters were mostly one sided, all good or all evil with the exception of one. This seems to be a story for middle school girls. They are likely the only ones to enjoy the story without being disturbed by the other factors.
Stilted dialog, flat, undeveloped characters and a predictable story line that jumps all around with no proper segues. In dire need of a good editor and proofreader.
This read like it was written by a twelve-year- old, with the most stilted dialogue I have ever experienced. I have to admit I read it all, just to see if it improved - NOT!
I must have read a different book to some other reviewers. The plot is hackneyed, the dialogue stilted and the characters have no life. And the grammar at time. "She lied in bed" occur es twice. No she wasn't telling lies she was lying down on her bed.
This was a very flat story. The plot had potential, but delivery was very poor. The storyline jumped between characters, perspectives, and locations between paragraphs without warning. No descriptions of characters, no helpful back story. And it ended so abruptly. I only finished to find out the details of "whodunnit" (since I pretty much knew who it was from the beginning, just not exactly how) and there were some other loose ends, but I won't ever know how they tie up as this writing style is not for me and so I won't continue the series. It could have been good had care been given to better development. As it stands, it is like rough draft of a novel that needs to be fleshed out thoroughly. I did appreciate that it was clean, though there is mention of a situation involving an unwed mother. I also have to say that Clara was a spoiled brat and her split personality every other page was irritating.
I'm really happy that this was a freebie. The character development was woefully lacking. Surely even the wealthy and educated of the early 1900s used some contractions, but there isn't one in the entire book. The author's aversion to the use of contractions made for an annoying read. And take some grammar lessons, please. There were numerous grammatical errors, but I'll only mention my personal pet peeve, the improper use of I vs. me. I won't continue this series.
Not a great book; not a terrible one. Needs some editing and if the upper crust heroine referred to someone's father as "pa" one more time, I'd have screamed. Slow, mundane plot and boring characters.
Written by an amateur!! Terrible
