Joseph Goldstein does an excellent job "translating" Buddhism into concepts that we Americans can get hold of. Much of the beautifully written explanations that come from Eastern Buddhist thinkers do not truly ring the bell of understanding in the American brain because our cultures are so different. Goldstein understands this and writes so we "get" it. I thank him for this gift.
If one is familiar with Insight meditation, this is very well organized conversation about various Vipassana dharma coming together. Very pleased the book acknowledges the importance of all six refuges. Very defiantly helps inform and layer my path. Thank you Joseph. Graciously envious of his capacity to put this on paper.
This book helped me a lot. If you have an interest in Buddhism and in following the Buddhist path, Joseph Goldstein distills the essence of Buddhism from all the traditions that can be confusing into a modern day explanation, relevant to our time. I'll read this more than once.
......So said he when asked at a retreat.I like his straight on meditation stuff better, but his thoughtful parsing of the strands of all the Buddhist belief systems is impeccable. Much, much insight for so few pages.There most def is an emerging American Buddhism and Goldstein is its most compelling and easy to take spokesman.

This is one of the best books I have read on Buddhism. Joseph Goldstein writes in a way that is clear, simple and profound. I would highly recommend it to buddhist students of all traditions.
Joseph Goldstein has the ability to explain the essence of Buddhism and it's core teachings in a very understandable and condensed format. If you are confused by the different Buddhist sects and dogmas, or are interested in the basics of Buddhist practice, then this book is for you. Goldstein has the background and insight to be a believable expert and teacher.
As someone who has just started studying Buddhism, I appreciated both the accessibility and the depth of this text. It does a good job of introducing core ideas, explaining their contrasting views (if they exist) in different Buddhist philosophies, and tying them together around their central principles. A great read - high recommended.
