While it does sound like something out of pulp fiction, the story of how Sam Childers became the gun-toting savior of thousands of otherwise forgotten African children is not only true but will make you wonder what you're doing with your own life. Do not try to give me the "Yet another tale of the white man saving the African" argument. No one else, regardless of color, was doing what Sam has done and continues to do, which is help the freedom fighters of south Sudan, attempt to care for the displaced and orphaned children whose lives are in danger everyday, and shine a light on the ongoing struggle. Why should it matter what his race is?I recently met Sam Childers and he is every bit as charismatic as he seems in the book. The book "sounds" like Sam, meaning it's definitely written in his own words. His words are not always eloquent, but are always passionate.
I was moved and amazed at how God is able to use anyone who is willing to trust and obey Him.This is not a true but far off story of a Bible character who lived long ago doing amazing things, but a true, current, and living story of life and death in our world TODAY!Read it and then take action, personally and collectively to help all in need - whether in East Africa or in your own back yard.
When I call this book a "difficult and inspiring read," it's not because of the prose. The book is written in a matter-of-fact, conversational way and it flows well.No, the difficult part is the subject matter. Sam Childers pulls no punches about his past as a drug-dealer, a biker hoodlum, etc. He takes the same approach to his work as a Christian soldier fighting against the LRA in Southern Sudan, rescuing children abused and orphaned by the vicious militia.Make no mistake, this is a violent tale ... in a violent place. Childers starts out helping roof a building for charity and winds up establishing an orphanage right int he middle of a war zone. He talks about his walk with God, his inspiration ... and the desperate need for funds.This book was the inspiration for an equally difficult and inspiring film, "Machine Gun Preacher." Both are highly recommended.
This book deserves ten stars! A very heart wrenching story. It is so hard to believe that such atrocities go on in this world, but they have since the beginning of sin and will continue to do so until the LORD comes back for us. It is very apparent that God sent Sam Childers to Africa to save as many of His children as he could. Very good read.
Quick read. Excellent message. I agree with some of this man's views. 1. You should give your money to a group that is actually working on-site. 2. That politicians and lawyers have a counter productive agenda. 3. That we all have sinned but still can realize the Glory of Christ in our lives. Pick up a copy and read it for yourself.
I've never read a book quite like this one. Sam Childers tells the good, bad, and the ugly. I love the work that Sam has done, not something I think I could have done. God calls people with different gifts and abilities to accomplish His work and I love the story of Sam Childers and the fact it is different than most will ever live.
Just as with almost every book, it is better than the movie. He gives thanks and praise to God throughout, unlike the movie which concentrates more on violent beginning and life and Africa than his relationship with God. I like how the author doesn't tell his story in chronological order, but bounces back and forth between his mission in Africa and his life before accepting Christ. I am still on the fence as to how I feel about his actions in Africa, but it is definitely a must-read.
He tells it like it is. Talk is just talk. He spills his guts out, warts and all. He unabashedly tells his sins and regrets. But what he has accomplished will lift you up. The plight of the South Sudanese is horrific and he has given his life to the orphans. An excellent must read.
