This is an extremely well written, well-researched true story about the life and madness of a young man named Joseph Christopher. There was an inordinate amount of information to wade through in this novel and while it was exceptionally thorough, the pace was not get bogged down by all the extenuating information. The information was not repetitive and was necessary to give the reader the full scope of the failure of the justice system and the medical profession in convicting Christopher for an unknown number of murders of black men by a young white male. There’s not much doubt Christopher was a very disturbed person. And, it is this undiagnosed, often pushed aside, medical madness that is at the root of Christopher’s demise. This is likely the first true murder novel where I felt anguish and deep sadness for the perpetrator. This is a classic example of the criminal justice system handling a tragedy where there is an enormous mental health issue. The underlying theme is not criminality at all. The system failed Christopher. He committed horrific crimes and there’s no excuse, but the flip side is that our system was not equipped to handle Joe Christopher.Catherine Pelonero does a fantastic job of bringing forth all of the necessary details so that the reader understands not only how the justice system punished Joe Christopher for not only his crimes but used Christopher as a scape goat to clear out at least 2 murders that most certainly did not involve Joe Christopher. The number of victims killed by Christopher is a question that cannot be answered with certainty. There was little physical evidence to tie him to any of the murders, and his confessions were totally unreliable. Pelonero does a compassionate yet thorough job of detailing Joseph Christopher’s life and his descent into madness. She shows the inside workings of the justice system and the medical system when dealing with mental illness. I felt both of these systems let Christopher down, the legal system in an effort to wrap up the open murder cases did not operate in honesty and the many doctors that examined Christopher could not have diagnosed him in the short periods they spoke with him. Good read, highly recommended.

Being a true crime buff I only read these types of books and rarely venture outside this arena. I have been anticipating this book for over a year and Pelonero certainly did not disappoint. I literally could not put the book down and enjoyed every twist and turn. Being born and raised in Buffalo NY I am intimately familiar with not only with this story but the places where the events occurred. Pelonero not only gives a perspective of details unknown until now but gives a glimpse from both the victims, Christopher himself, his family and friends. Outstanding read!! Can't wait until the next one. Keep up the good work!!

I never heard of this story previously, the book appeared as a recommendation on Amazon so I took a free Kindle sample and could not believe what I read so I bought it and thoroughly enjoyed the book. What Christopher did was beyond any comprehension, I'm not a law expert and since this happened over 30 years ago the laws may have changed but I don't think he should have ever been put on trial. He was insane and part of mental illness is not taking medication and being in denial that there is even an issue. IMO he should not have been allowed to make some of the legal decisions that he made and the doctors that found him fit for trial were very questionable. The book is real well written and has a good flow to it that keeps your interest.

What a page turner! And what an American tragedy! (Mini-spoiler: At least two murders were likely pinned on Joe Christopher that he may well have not committed simply for expediency and in the interest of pacifying the public at the time.) Be aware that there are a number of moving parts to this one, and during the investigative phase the number of detectives, cops, victims and witnesses can sometime be overwhelming, although the key forces at play did tend to rise to the top by the end of the investigation. Fascinating insight into the mind of one of America's lesser-known serial killers. I highly recommend!

I remember this case and how frightened people were at the time. I like many didn't know all the details. This book is very comprehensive and opens a much needed dialogue about mental health care. I felt the author was balanced in presenting the facts of the case. I would highly recommend reading "Absolute Madness"

I could not put this book down. I lived in Buffalo when this was happening, I was in my 20s and there are so many details in this book that I simply never was aware of. I lived in Christopher's neighborhood and attended PS 82 and St. Lawrence Church. I also worked at Gene Emser Motor Sales just before him. I am not trying to make this "all about me." What I AM trying to say is, "The details are spot-on." An excellent read. Never drags. Many of my friends want to borrow this -- they can buy their own copy! UPDATE: JUST PURCHASED MY SECOND COPY ON 12/8 BECAUSE PEOPLE KEEP BORROWING MINE!

After reading about 20% of the book, I just didn't care any more, not about the killer, not about the victims, and not about the police. Too much dry detail. No excitement.

Excellent book. Looks like it was well researched. Read it in 2 days.
