Very interesting textbook! It's more or less a collection of writings of philosophers and articles rather than a textbook that boils down and explains the ideas or focuses on philosophy as a whole subject. Many subjects are covered and the book always contains opposing views so there's nothing to suggest a bias of opinion. The only problem I had with the book was in its physical being; it's a pretty large book, but it's a softcover with flimsy, glossy pages (like those in a fashion magazine or typical hardcover textbook) so it was really hard to use it without damaging it. I was constantly worried about ripping a page while flipping through it or cracking the spine when I opened it since I purchased it new with the intention of re-selling it to minimize my expenses and wished to keep it as nice as possible. I think this should have been printed in hardcover because of its size, or at least been given proper paper pages so it had a little more stability (my public health book was a big paperback but because it had actual paper pages and not the glossy ones it was much more sturdy and easy to use).Overall it was a pretty nice book and I ended up loving my philosophy class and traded this in for a very nice price when I was done, so I guess everything was alright at the end, so it gets 5 stars.

Good introductory test, but with the caveat that it would be good only in relation to an instructor-led environment. There are a ton of primary excerpts from philosophical works and some interesting point/counter point essays on a variety of philosophical topics. However, the actual instruction is paltry. Each topic is prefaced with a short description of the topic at hand followed by the aforementioned excerpts. In my opinion, without the benefit of a knowledgeable instructor, the reader can't be expected to learn much. Therefore, I would recommend this book for either a formal classroom environment or even an online class, but not for independent study (at the beginner level).

I got this book in 2 days as a prime member (student) and wasn't damaged at all but of the use it has the side of the book bend a little. Inside all pages are clean, no writing in it as well. I read many different perspectives about God that I never though about. Who created the Universe, God or the Big Bang?

The book itself is good and thought provoking as you read it. Consists mostly of philosophers' articles and other philosophers' arguments as to why this philosopher is wrong and so on (lol). Other than that, it's quite hard to read and not for everyone. My biggest complaint, though, is not the book itself but how it came in physically. I've posted pictures to show the state of the book. I know that it's just a rental but I was quite astounded and felt pity for the book.

Turns out that I’m not a fan of philosophy but this book was really cheap compared to prices at other places so that’s nice!

awesome book for beginning philosophy. learned a lot- sound like i know much more than i do. covers all big ideas one should think about in life to be a decent human being worthy of breathing.

The book overall is great in the beggining but it gets a bit dull. However, I recommend it for the overall intro to philosophy.

Exactly what was needed for class! Great cost, too!
